Monday 10th August 2020 – Loch Tarbert to Iona, to Tinkers Hole

A golden sunrise greeted us this morning for our early departure to the island of Iona.

Sun rise as we set off

Sailing past Mull on our starboard side and Scalasaig to port we saw several puffins displaying their unmistakeable oversized bright orange/red bills and matching large feet.
For a couple of minutes we switched the engine on to dodge the submerged rocks and lobster pots between the larger above surface Torran Rocks. The seabird recognition book went into overdrive, lots to see around these fabulous rock formations.

Some very careful navigating going on

We reached Iona and looked at the anchorage but decided against staying. The water was shallow in parts with submerged rocks and although there was a route through this was littered with lobster pots. We therefore moved on to Tinkers Hole, a known beauty spot previously recommended to us by the owners of Jaynor.

There is a way through
Made it

On entering the cove is was a bit disturbing to see a sailing boat on its side taking in water.
We heard on Ch. 16 that the crew had been rescued by lifeboat and were OK. It felt a bit like rubber necking but there were no other suitable places to anchor in this area.

On the rocks, they didn’t

What a stunning place. The water is crystal clear and the holding is sand. It’s a haven for seals and birds and we just love it here. Never before have we seen one wild but an otter has just swam past!

One many seals around us
Another couple of seals

We have sunshine and sitting up on deck is totally wonderful.

This could be Sweden
Close to the rocks
Steep sides to the rocks
