Thursday 30th July 2020 – Campbeltown at anchor

Talavera thrashing about in a very windy although protected anchorage

Other than four local swimmers and a small fishing boat this anchorage was totally quiet last night. The holding and shelter from all directions, except North East winds, is good so our plan is to sit here, catch up on admin (test out our drinks cabinet) and chill out until sailing conditions improve over the next couple of days.

Looking towards Campbeltown

At first, kind of ‘light’, the shore, which is less than 100m away, could hardly be seen, a brightly painted white house is just about visible. Looking in any other direction – nothing. True to the forecast it has been lashing down with rain today. The winds have been a steady 21 kts gusting 30 plus, but we are holding well. The sea state is far too bouncy for the dinghy at the moment, but hopefully tomorrow we’ll get to go ashore and walk into the village.

This is the mean wind speed and the depth only rises by a couple of metres

We’ve got a problem with one of our navigation lights, so have contacted the supplier in Southampton who will send a replacement to the Faslane post office, Gare Loch, for us to collect early next week, so our plan going forward is to island hop in that direction.

Early, well late morning wet or brew

We are discovering why Jocks distil their own whisky, create weird dances and like to dress up in colour clashing tartan skirts, we’re with them in all of that, ‘och aye the noo’. Wish we were enjoying a celidh in town but will have to make do with the Talavera two-step tonight!

The Ship’s Cat asking when can we have a run ashore?

Well that’s it for today, hopefully we will have more to repot tomorrow

Tim & Rowena Heale sail on Talavera a Hallberg Rassy 36 mk2 and this summer 2018 they plan to sail from Gosport to the Baltic, follow their journey as they travel north.
