Monday 20th July 2020 – at anchor in Rushy Bay (Bryher)

The view from Rushy Bay of the anchorage

Yesterday we moved anchorages from Tresco to Rushy Bay (Bryher) because the wind direction changed and we needed better shelter.

The sunset was truly amazing

We were treated to a sunset last night with rocky foreground, it was very peaceful to sit up on deck watching it go down with a cuppa. We were very well sheltered in this Rushy Bay and got a good night’s sleep. ‘Polar Bear’ and ‘Moonshadow’ are anchored here as well.

All the pictures today are of our walk around the tiny island of Bryher, we went one and a half times around and also across it, so have seen the sights from most angles – it’s absolutely stunning.

Stunning views
The camp site with happy campers having a BBQ

A farm was selling courgettes and broad beans in pods, so we stocked up on fresh vegetables; it’s a nice change to eat produce with a proper veg flavour. As well as selling garden produce the local houses seem to be taking orders for home made pizzas. There are almost as many take-always here than at home! We also found a post office that sold a few groceries.

A post card of the islands

The main hotel on Bryher is closed for the whole of the season, however the camp site at the top of the island looks quite busy. The campers get great views of the coves, it looks like a perfect place to pitch a tent.

Tents not as we know them!

Some of the hedgerows were intertwined with honeysuckle and it smelled gorgeous as we strolled back along the bracken lined paths back to Rushy Bay, where our dinghy was beached ready to take us back onboard Talavera.

Stunning array of flowers
They even have wildlife here

Although the distance to our boat was very short it had an element of a challenge about it. There was so much weed floating up to the surface that it wrapped around the outboard and stalled it, so we switched to using oars. Each stroke through the water felt like putting the breaks on as long, brown, spaghetti type weed wrapped itself around the blades. We got the giggles and ended up going around in circles clearing the oars of this stuff.

Artie finally got the chance to explore the rocks, he does like his runs ashore!

Back on board the sun shone all day long – Tim recorded a bit more of his podcast and Row played her keyboard wearing headphones so the seagulls couldn’t hear her.

We will look and moving on tomorrow and have to go alongside St Mary’s for water, we have just had to go onto the second water tank, not bad going from when we left Gosport, we have both had 2 showers each whilst onboard.

All three of us hope you are enjoying our daily adventures? Please if you have the time at the end could you leave us a comment as it will a lot and we will know that people are reading our blog. Thanks for reading 📖.

  1. You two sound like your having fab time, and pics are great, wish I was there. Looks like you getting fit with all that rowing Tim. I’d rather listen to Row on piano than seagulls, keep going girl. xx
