Wednesday 5th August 2020 – Alongside at Rhu Marina, Helensburgh

Rhu Marina our home for the last couple of days

It was blowing an hooley last night and a few houses in Rhu have flooded, but the good news is our parcel arrived so we can move on tomorrow.

Gearlockhead itself, some tatty old looking boats moored there!

There was a brief interlude from the rain so we made a dash to the bus stop and travelled as far as it would take us, which was only to Garelockhead close to the submarine base; the roads further along the route were flooded.

The ‘peace camp’ Tim remembered from 1999 when he attended a course at Faslane, was still there and even more ramshackle than before. As there was not much else to see and nowhere open we crossed the road, waited ten minutes, then got the bus back into Helensburgh.

A brief look at the peace camp

The town was quite busy and in addition to the usual High Street chain stores we came across a few quirky shops, which made a nice change to wander around. We had a pleasant pub lunch, lots of coffees, killed a bit of time, then walked back to the boat just in time for the heavens to open and commence teaming down with rain again. On the bright side this gave us more time for passage planning and the people on neighbouring boats were always up for a chat, so all good, we’re having a great time.

Update on our Porbeagle shark sighting (24 July) – actually it probably wasn’t.
Another boat owner has said there have been some sightings of Ocean Sunfish this year in the south. We looked this huge thing up on the internet and what we saw looked very much like one, which would explain why we couldn’t see its tail, it looked like a floating torso and was seriously ugly. We have downloaded a couple of pictures from the internet, but the thing we saw had bigger eyes, a horrible looking creature.

Ugly buggars ain’t they?
Half a shark?

We are leaving tomorrow and heading south before going round the Mull of Kintyre and heading north again, it may take a few days to get round there!
