Saturday 18th July 2020 – Porthcressa to Old Grimsby – 10nm – 2 hrs

Today’s passage from Porth Cressa via New Grimsby to Old Grimsby

The wind is due to change to the north so we have moved anchorages. This morning we sailed the longer route over to Old Grimsby, than the short cut we took yesterday. This anchorage is between Tresco and St Helens. It is absolutely beautiful with small sandy beaches, fabulous rock formations and it is an unspoilt spot with very few people here.

The sail over was lively, the waves were quite large rollers and we had 10kts of wind so it was good to shake out the sails and not rely on the engine. We saw a couple of dolphins and also a pair of puffins, which are rarely seen here, very close to the boat.

We had a good couple metres waves, difficult to show on photos

We are anchored next to two other ASA boats, ‘Moonshadow’ and ‘Silver Bear’. We had to re-set our anchor because we found ourselves dragging, there’s plenty of kelp here which we couldn’t see from the surface. We’re now secured in a sandy spot, close to the shoreline and a short row across for this afternoon’s walk on the island of Tresco.

The pictures show the beautiful views of the harbour from the ruins of a blockhouse/fort on Tresco. The beaches are empty of people, just sea-shells and fine golden sand – bliss.

We took the Ship’s Cat for a run ashore this afternoon he does like.
