Friday 17th July 2020 – Porthcressa to New Grimsby and back to Porthcressa – 10 nm

Our track today over to Bryher and back again, the reason we came back because it was a little exposed there.

We motored the short distance over to the island of Bryher today and anchored at New Grimsby while we went ashore. One of the cottages was selling home grown peas and another had freshly baked iced buns for sale.

Leaving Porth Cressa harbour

Bryher is only 2km x 1km and is one of the smallest inhabited islands – we went over specifically to chat with Steve, the local engine mechanic, who wasn’t difficult to find.

Michael Morpurgo wrote his book ‘ When the Whales Came’ about Bryher and it was made into a film starring Helen Mirren, Helen Pearce, Paul Scofield and David Suchet and filmed on location here at Bryher.

Another piece of trivia, the granite houses have walls too thick for a wireless door bell system to work and the only shop closes at 2pm.

We didn’t want to pay for a buoy on Tresco besides the wind was making it look uncomfortable!!!

Challange Aneka team successfully built a fantastic new jetty, that meant residents and visitors no longer had to climb up a ladder to get ashore! Even having withstood some truly horrendous weather conditions over the years, the Jetty continues to be used every day by residents of Bryher – and it has also helped to increase the number of visitors and tourists to the island!

We’re now back in Porthcressa (St Mary’s) as the anchorage is sheltered and we just love it, we’ll take the Ship’s Cat for a run ashore later…

Thought we would splice the main brace or just have a sundowner
